There can be quite a lot of tweaking of the Adsense settings required to get the most out of the ads that are displayed on your pages. One common mistake many Adsense newbies make is to plonk a highly colored ad on their pages in an attempt to wave at their visitors and shout: "Look, I'm an ad. Click Me!" It doesn't work. You've got to be subtle and seduce your visitors into clicking the ads, not wave a red flag that says "Avoid this part of the page!".
With that in mind, once you've started putting Adsense ads on your webpages, use these 10 simple tips in order to make them work better for you:
- Don't use the 468x60 horizontal banner format. Visitors subconsciously edit out banner sized ads and you won't get the clicks. The 728x90 horizontal leaderboard format is the better one to choose if you must use the horizontal format.
- On the Competitive Ad Filter screen (in the Adsense control panel), enter the web addresses of your competitors (if you have any) so their ads aren't displayed on your site. [Don't enter a list of your own websites as some people have done!]
- Try the different ad formats and placement on your pages. There are no hard and fast rules. What works for your site may not work for someone else. Record the number of clickthroughs you get (your Adsense Stats) and replicate the ad layout you use on your successful pages onto your other pages.
- Generally, the 300x250 and 336x280 rectangles get the most clicks, so they're a good place to start.
- Always place your first ad block (you can have up to three per page) at the top of a page where a visitor will see it once the page loads (they may not scroll down the page to see your ads if your first block is buried down there somewhere).
- There seems to be equal preference for having the ad blocks at the left or right of the page. Test what works best for you.
You can use the HTML below to position your ad blocks easily:
<table align=right><tr><td>
<!-- google adsense code goes here -->
</td></tr></table>Set the "align" parameter to "left", "right" or "center" depending on where you want the ad block to appear.
- Generally, it's best to set the background color of the ads to your page color and to turn the ad block border off so that the ads blend in better with the rest of your page.
- Create an alternative mini-webpage that can be displayed in place of an ad block so you can still get some clicks instead of allowing the public service ads to appear (you don't get paid for clicks on these). If your ad block is 300x250, create a HTML page with a table that's 300x250 pixels in size and put whatever you want in that space. Then set the Alternate URL address to be that of your mini-page in the Google Adsense Control Panel.
- Set the ad link colors to match the link colors on the rest of your page.
- Try setting the text and URL colours in the ads to the text color you use on your page.
Implementing just these few things should see your Adsense revenue increase. But, if you're serious about making the most out of Adsense, you need to do a little homework. These resources were a great help to me when I was starting out with Adsense 3 years ago (Adsense Videos cam along about 18 months ago). Back then I made a couple of bucks a month. Now I pull in over $600!

You pay a fee to have your website hosted, right? Why not get Google Adsense to cover the hosting costs? With even just $1 a day though clicks, that would cover the annual bill for all but the most expensive hosting packages, and still leave some pocket change to spare! Remember, every website should pay for itself!
